Two generations separate these machines, and on paper the gap looks decisive. In daily use it mostly is not. Writing, browsing, spreadsheets, video calls and light photo work feel the same on both, because neither chip is the bottleneck — the workload is.

The M4 pulls ahead in three specific places: sustained multi-core work such as video export and large compiles, external display support, and the base memory configuration it ships with. If none of those describe your week, the M2 is the better purchase and the difference buys a monitor.

What actually matters

Memory configuration matters more than the chip. A 16 GB M2 will outlast an 8 GB M4 for browser-heavy multitasking. Compare configurations, not chip names.
