macOS handles display scaling differently from Windows, and that single fact decides which monitor you should buy. Apple's rendering looks best at roughly 110 or 220 pixels per inch — near-native or exactly double. Panels that land between those figures need fractional scaling, and text picks up a soft edge that never quite goes away.

That is why a 27-inch 4K panel (about 163 PPI) is a compromise, a 32-inch 4K panel (about 138 PPI) is a different compromise, and a 27-inch 5K panel (218 PPI) is the one that looks flawless. Most people still buy 4K, because 5K costs substantially more.

Beyond sharpness, the practical questions are whether the monitor charges your MacBook over a single cable, whether it has a usable webcam-height stand, and whether the built-in speakers are good enough to skip a desk speaker.

What actually matters

  • Pixel density decides text quality. 27-inch 4K gives sharp text at 'looks like 1440p' scaling but uses fractional rendering. 32-inch 4K is comfortable at native scaling with larger text. 27-inch 5K is the only size that hits Apple's exact 2x target — if text quality is the priority, this is the answer.
  • One-cable docking via USB-C. Look for at least 90 W power delivery so the monitor charges a MacBook Pro while carrying video and USB devices over the same cable. This is the single biggest quality-of-life feature on a Mac desk.
  • Refresh rate is optional on a Mac. macOS feels smoother at 120 Hz, but few Mac workflows require it and high-refresh 4K panels cost more. Prioritise it only if you also game on the machine.
  • Matte versus glossy. Apple's own displays use a glass finish that renders colour beautifully but mirrors the room. A good matte coating is easier to live with in a bright office; a poor one adds visible grain.
  • Colour coverage for creative work. For photo and video, look for wide-gamut coverage (P3) and a factory calibration report. For writing, code and spreadsheets, standard sRGB coverage is entirely sufficient and much cheaper.

Windows scales the interface with fractional multipliers that it renders well. macOS prefers a 2x rendering path, so a 27-inch 1440p panel gives macOS roughly 109 PPI with no doubling available — text ends up noticeably chunkier than users expect from a Mac.

Is 27-inch 4K or 32-inch 4K better for macOS?

27-inch is sharper per pixel and best used at scaled 1440p-equivalent. 32-inch is comfortable at native scaling with more workspace but visibly lower density. If sharpness matters most, take 27-inch; if desk space and window layout matter most, take 32-inch.

Only on mini-LED or OLED panels with real local dimming. Entry-level 'HDR400' certification on an edge-lit IPS panel changes very little and is not worth a premium.
