A one-litre mini PC covers office work, media, light development and even modest gaming, for less than a comparable tower and with a fraction of the desk footprint. The category matured fast, and the trade-offs are no longer performance — they are serviceability and noise.

The main buying risk is soldered components. A mini PC with soldered RAM and one storage slot is a fixed appliance; one with two SODIMM slots and two M.2 slots is a machine you can keep for six years.

What actually matters

  • Upgradeable RAM and storage. Two SODIMM slots and a spare M.2 slot are the difference between a machine you extend and one you replace. Check before buying, not after.
  • Display outputs and count. Confirm how many monitors the unit drives simultaneously and at what refresh rate. Two HDMI ports does not always mean two independent 4K 60 Hz displays.
  • Cooling noise under sustained load. Small chassis mean small fans, and small fans mean high pitch. If the machine sits on your desk, look for reviews that mention noise under continuous load, not idle.
  • External power brick size. Higher-performance units use large adapters that need their own space behind the desk. Low-power models run from a USB-C brick.
  • Integrated graphics have got good — within limits. Modern integrated graphics handle 1080p esports titles and all media work comfortably. They are not a substitute for a discrete card at 1440p.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mini PC as fast as a desktop tower?

For CPU work, very close — they use mobile chips that trade some sustained performance for heat. For graphics, no: there is no discrete card, so demanding games and GPU rendering still need a tower.

Can I upgrade a mini PC later?

Usually the RAM and storage, if they are socketed. The CPU is soldered in essentially every model, so buy the processor you want for the machine's whole life.

Do mini PCs run hot or loud?

They run warm by design and the fan is audible under sustained load. For an on-desk machine, prioritise reviews that measure noise during long workloads.

Does it come with Windows?

Most ship with a licence pre-installed, but budget imports sometimes do not, or use an unactivated copy. Confirm the licence is included before comparing prices.
