Development work is bursty. Most of the day a laptop sits idle in an editor; occasionally it compiles, runs a test suite, or spins up half a dozen containers. That profile favours machines with lots of memory and good short-burst performance over sustained-load monsters.

The specification that ends laptops early is memory. Containers, language servers, simulators and a browser full of documentation add up fast, and on most modern laptops memory is soldered. Everything else — keyboard, screen ratio, port selection — is preference, and worth respecting because you type on it all day.

What actually matters

  • 32 GB if you run containers or virtual machines. 16 GB is workable for web and scripting work. Docker-heavy backend development, Android emulators or local databases push past it routinely.
  • Keyboard quality is not a luxury. You will type millions of characters on this machine. Key travel, layout and a sane arrow-key cluster matter more than a thinner chassis.
  • Vertical screen space. A 16:10 or 3:2 panel shows meaningfully more code than 16:9 at the same diagonal. It is the cheapest productivity upgrade available.
  • Unix-like environment out of the box. macOS and Linux avoid an entire category of tooling friction. Windows is fine with WSL2, but budget memory for it — the virtual machine is not free.
  • Battery for the mobile half of the job. Efficient ARM-based laptops now do a full day unplugged; high-wattage gaming laptops do not. If you work from cafés or trains, weight this heavily.

Frequently asked questions

Is 16 GB of RAM enough for development in 2026?

For front-end, scripting and most web work, yes. For containerised backends, Android emulation, local databases or several virtual machines, 32 GB removes a daily source of friction — and it usually cannot be added later.

Mac, Windows or Linux?

macOS and Linux give a native Unix toolchain, which removes a lot of setup friction. Windows with WSL2 is genuinely good now, but it runs a Linux VM in the background, so budget extra memory for it.

Do I need a discrete GPU?

Only for local machine-learning work, game development or GPU-accelerated data science. For ordinary software development it adds heat, weight and cost with no benefit.

Is a 13-inch laptop too small to code on?

Not with a 16:10 panel and an external monitor at the desk. Many developers prefer the portability and treat the laptop screen as the mobile compromise rather than the main workspace.
